US President Donald Trump to Meet with Chinese Leader Amid Iran War Tensions

A visit by US President Donald Trump to Beijing is scheduled for this week, during which he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss various issues, including the ongoing war in Iran. The trip, initially postponed due to the conflict, will take place on Wednesday evening and conclude on Friday.

According to White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly, the visit will focus on “rebalancing the relationship with China” and prioritizing “reciprocity and fairness”. This week’s meeting is considered of “tremendous symbolic significance”.

The US delegation will also include business executives from aerospace manufacturer Boeing and a handful of agricultural companies. The talks are expected to cover various topics, including Iran’s energy sales, trade, and rare earth minerals.

China has been accused by the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of “funding” Iran through its purchase of 90% of their energy. However, China has denied recognizing Washington’s “unilateral” sanctions on Iran’s oil sector.

The visit comes as the war in Iran continues to disrupt global energy supplies and economies. The US and China have differing views on several issues, including Taiwan, which is a major sticking point in relations between the two countries.

A senior administration official stated that Trump may “apply pressure” on China regarding Iran-related issues during the talks. The outcome of the meeting remains uncertain, but it is expected to be a significant event in US-China relations.
