US President Trumps Speech Fact-Checked for Accuracy After One Year in Office

US President Donald Trump marked the one-year anniversary of the start of his second term by holding a press conference at the White House. The event lasted approximately 104 minutes, during which time Trump showcased various achievements and policies implemented since taking office in January 2025.

The briefing began with a presentation of photographs depicting individuals arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, highlighting recent immigration actions. Trump then proceeded to outline his administration’s accomplishments, including economic initiatives and foreign policy efforts.

During the Q&A session, reporters posed questions on various topics, including foreign policy, economic data, and immigration policies. Trump addressed these inquiries, providing information on his administration’s efforts to acquire Greenland, establish a “Board of Peace” in Gaza, and address the situation in Venezuela.

On specific issues, such as the economy and immigration, Trump stated that inflation is minimal, citing price data from the past year. He also emphasized the focus on deporting individuals with criminal convictions, noting that approximately 74% of immigrants in detention have no prior convictions.

However, some claims made by Trump were disputed or inaccurate. For example, he claimed the US had secured a record-breaking $18 trillion in commitments for new investments, whereas the White House website reported a figure of $9.6 trillion. Additionally, Trump stated that gasoline prices are around $1.99 in many states, but data from Gas Buddy showed that no state has seen its average price fall below $2.

The press conference took place a day before Trump’s scheduled departure to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
