US reduces military aid to Taiwan amid diplomatic tensions

US President Donald Trump did not commit to an arms sale during his visit to China. In 2022, tensions between the US and China reached a low point when Trump announced tariffs on Chinese goods, known as “Liberation Day” tariffs. The following months saw some concessions from both sides, including the White House’s decision to suspend a $14 billion arms sale to Taiwan.

Taiwan is claimed by China as its sovereign territory. During Trump’s visit to Beijing this week, Xi Jinping referred to Taiwan as the “single most important issue” in relations with the US. The US has not made any official statements on whether it will proceed with the arms sale despite this statement from Xi.

The suspension of the arms sale was a concession made by the White House before Trump’s visit. It is unclear what impact this may have had on the outcome of his meeting with Xi Jinping. The relationship between Beijing and Washington has been strained in recent years, and tensions over Taiwan are a significant factor in these relations.

Experts from various organizations attended an Al Jazeera English discussion on the implications of this dispute for US-China relations.
