US Considering Iran’s Proposal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Amid Ongoing War
The United States has received a proposal from Iran aimed at ending the ongoing war between the two countries. The offer includes reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz, but postpones discussion on Tehran’s nuclear program. According to US media outlets, officials in Washington have expressed skepticism about the plan.
Iran’s latest proposal focuses on de-escalation in the Gulf without immediately placing restraints on its nuclear activities. In exchange for lifting its naval blockade on Iranian ports and ending the war, Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a critical passage that links Gulf oil producers to the open ocean, with one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passing through it.
The proposal was conveyed to Washington through Pakistan, which has been acting as a mediator. Iranian officials have stated that the messages relayed were “unrelated to negotiations” and are an initiative by Iran to clarify the regional situation. Analysts believe that Tehran is seeking a new approach after its previous model of making compromises on its nuclear program in exchange for economic sanctions relief was deemed unviable.
The US has announced a blockade on Iranian ports and ships, restricting Tehran’s ability to export oil and cutting off a crucial source of revenue. The proposal from Iran includes discussions on the nuclear file being postponed until after the war ends.
