US Senate Passes Resolution Limiting Presidential Military Action Against Venezuela
A resolution aimed at restricting US President Donald Trump’s ability to take military action against Venezuela without congressional authorization has been passed by the Senate with a vote of 52-47. The measure, which received a simple majority in Thursday’s vote, will now proceed to the House of Representatives for consideration.
The resolution comes amid heightened tensions between the US and Venezuela, following a recent military raid on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s compound in Caracas. In response to this event, senators are set to vote on a war powers measure introduced since September, when the administration increased its military pressure on the country through attacks on boats off its coast.
The resolution is part of a series of measures aimed at limiting presidential authority in times of crisis. Despite Republican opposition, two senators from Trump’s party voted in favor of a similar resolution in November, which was blocked by Republicans. Administration officials had stated at that time that they did not intend to alter the government or conduct strikes on Venezuelan territory.
The outcome of Thursday’s vote will determine whether the measure is sent to the House for further consideration.
