US Senator Rubios claim on Israeli involvement sparks controversy over Iran attack

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided a statement on Monday regarding the US’s involvement in the conflict with Iran, citing Israel as a key factor in the decision-making process.

According to Rubio, Israel was planning to strike Iran, which would have prompted Tehran to retaliate against US assets in the region. In response, Washington launched preemptive strikes on Iran. This assertion has sparked controversy across the political spectrum, with some commentators questioning the administration’s justification for the war.

US President Donald Trump offered a different characterization of the situation when asked about Rubio’s statement on Tuesday. Trump stated that he launched the war because he believed Iran was preparing to attack Israel and others.

The US administration has maintained that the conflict posed a significant threat to regional stability, but some experts argue that this justification may not align with international law. The administration has provided limited evidence of an imminent attack on US assets or a direct threat from Iran’s nuclear program.

Rubio had previously mentioned the broader threat posed by Iran, including its ballistic missile and drone capabilities. However, he later clarified that his initial statement was taken out of context. Rubio stated that the US knew Israel would take action and that Washington preemptively struck to avoid higher casualties.

The shifting messaging has been met with criticism from various groups, including some influential figures within Trump’s base. A senior fellow at the Stimson Center expressed concerns about the perceived entrapment by Israel, while a former executive director of Human Rights Watch questioned the US interest in arming and funding Israel for the purpose of drawing the country into war.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) described Rubio’s statement as a “stunning admission” that the US did not attack Iran due to an imminent threat. The organization has called for Congress to pass war powers resolutions to rein in Trump’s ability to wage war.
