FIFA’s World Cup Ticket Sales Remain Underwhelming Despite High Prices
With less than 40 days to go until the tournament, FIFA is struggling to meet demand for tickets to its group-stage matches. Tickets for the opening game between the United States and Paraguay are available for $1,120-$4,105, with many seats priced around $2,000.
FIFA has announced a “last-minute ticket phase” to sell remaining tickets, which will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis. The tournament’s hospitality package groupings have the highest prices, ranging from $1,120 to $6,050 per seat.
The World Cup is expected to generate significant revenue for FIFA, with President Gianni Infantino predicting revenues of over $11 billion. However, fans are expressing frustration with the high ticket prices, citing dynamic pricing and resale market as contributing factors.
Peter Moore, a former sports executive, has criticized FIFA’s approach, stating that the organization is taking advantage of unique commercial opportunities in the US to maximize profits. He suggested that FIFA could generate more revenue by setting prices lower, potentially around $8 billion.
As of now, seven group-stage games still have general sale tickets available for $380. The most expensive group game is the USA vs Paraguay opener, followed by several other matches. A total of 17 group-stage games are sold out, including the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa in Mexico City on June 11.
Fans can purchase remaining tickets through FIFA’s official website, which lists available seats for all 104 matches.
