US Air Strike on Migrant Detention Centre in Yemen Under Investigation
A strike by a US air force on April 28, 2025, targeted a migrant detention facility in Saada, Yemen, resulting in the deaths of at least 68 people and injuring 47. The incident occurred as part of a larger prison complex that had previously been visited by representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations.
According to Amnesty International, the US administration’s approach to air strikes in Yemen from March to May 2025 raised concerns about civilian casualties. The organization has called for an investigation into the incident, citing a lack of transparency from the US military regarding its findings.
Survivors of the strike have reported ongoing physical and psychological harm, with many unable to afford treatment. Six Ethiopian men were among those injured in the attack, with five unable to work due to their injuries and four remaining in Yemen while two have returned home.
The US Defence Department has stated that it was assessing reports of civilian casualties following the incident. However, Amnesty International claims that a year after the strike, no public findings from an investigation or announced accountability measures have been released by the US military’s Central Command.
This incident is one of several reported civilian casualties linked to US strikes in recent years, including a strike on a school in Minab, Iran, which killed 156 people. Amnesty International has urged Washington to conduct prompt and transparent investigations into such incidents and increase oversight of military operations to ensure reparations for civilians harmed.
