US Supreme Court Clears Path for Dismissal of Steve Bannon Criminal Case

US Supreme Court Clears Way for Dismissal of Steve Bannon’s Case

The United States Supreme Court has granted a request from the Justice Department to dismiss a criminal case against Steve Bannon, a key ally of President Donald Trump. The decision clears the way for Bannon’s conviction on two counts of contempt of Congress to be vacated.

Bannon was convicted in 2022 after refusing to provide documents or testify before the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters. He served a four-month prison sentence as a result of his conviction.

The Justice Department had filed a motion to dismiss the case at the trial court level and has now obtained approval from the Supreme Court. The department stated that dismissing Bannon’s case is in the interests of justice.

Evan Corcoran, a lawyer for Bannon, welcomed the Supreme Court’s action on Monday. “It has been one battle after another for five years,” he said. “Today, the Supreme Court vacated an unjust conviction and validated a fundamental rule – like oil and water, politics and prosecution don’t mix.”

The dismissal of Bannon’s case would remove his conviction from the record, but it would have little practical impact since he has already served his sentence. Bannon was released from prison a week before Trump’s victory in the 2024 US presidential election.

Bannon had been subpoenaed by Congress to provide documents and testify about his role in the January 6 attack. He had argued that executive privilege and other legal principles prevented him from complying with the subpoena. The Supreme Court’s decision does not address these issues, but rather clears the way for Bannon’s case to be dismissed.

The Justice Department has taken several actions since Trump returned to office last year that have benefited allies and supporters of the Republican president.
