US Supreme Court Reinstates Redrawn Texas Electoral Map

The US Supreme Court has formally reinstated a redrawn Texas electoral map, which is expected to boost Republican representation in the House of Representatives. The court’s decision was issued on Monday and marks a split along ideological lines, with six conservative justices in the majority and three liberal justices dissenting.

The map, which was approved by the Republican-led state legislature in August 2025 and signed by Governor Greg Abbott, could potentially flip up to five Democratic-held House seats to Republicans. The Supreme Court’s ruling overturned a lower court decision that had blocked the map’s use due to concerns over racial discrimination and constitutional protections.

President Donald Trump had urged Republican lawmakers to redraw congressional maps to strengthen their position ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Civil rights advocates have criticized the decision, arguing that it weakens the political influence of racial minorities.

The fight over electoral maps is not limited to Texas. In Florida, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed a new congressional map aimed at flipping four Democratic-held House seats in the midterm elections. The proposal remains unclear whether it will pass in the Republican-controlled legislature.

In Virginia, voters last week narrowly approved a Democratic-backed map targeting four Republican incumbents. Republicans have filed multiple lawsuits challenging the measure, and the state’s Supreme Court heard arguments in one such case on Monday.
