US takeover proposal rejected by Greenland authorities

Greenland’s Government Reiterates NATO Membership, Rejects US Takeover

In a statement released on Monday, the government of Greenland has reaffirmed its commitment to NATO membership and rejected any possibility of a US takeover. The self-governed Danish territory stated that it will not accept any attempt by the United States to exert control over the island.

According to the statement, Greenland’s defense is the responsibility of the transatlantic alliance, as part of its membership in NATO. The government emphasized that this stance cannot be altered under any circumstances.

The US President has previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, citing concerns about the territory’s strategic location and potential influence from countries such as Russia and China. However, European leaders have expressed support for Copenhagen and Greenland, warning that a takeover would have significant repercussions for ties between the US and Europe.

In response to US threats, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that all allies agree on the importance of Arctic security, citing concerns about increased Russian and Chinese activity in the region. The Chinese Foreign Ministry also issued a statement, urging the US to respect the rights and freedoms of other countries to conduct activities in the Arctic in accordance with international law.

The US has maintained its interest in acquiring Greenland despite offers to address US concerns. The territory currently hosts a US military base, which is seen as a key factor in the dispute.
