US Tariff Hike on Furniture and Cabinets Paused for One Year

US President Signs Order Pausing Tariffs on Certain Products

United States President Donald Trump has signed an order pausing the implementation of tariffs on upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities for one year. The order, which was issued during the New Year’s Eve holiday, will delay a planned 50 percent tariff on cabinets and vanities and a 30 percent tariff on upholstered furniture.

The order maintains the existing 25 percent tariff on these products, which Trump had introduced in September as part of an effort to “bolster American industry and protect national security.” The decision comes amid growing concerns over cost-of-living issues, particularly among voters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

A recent poll conducted by Politico found that 30 percent of respondents cited tariffs as a primary reason for high prices, while 32 percent blamed Trump for the state of the economy. The cost of living was also identified as a top issue facing the country, with 32 percent of respondents citing it as a major concern.

In related news, the US and Italy have agreed to reduce proposed import duties on pasta products from certain companies. The US Commerce Department had previously threatened tariffs of up to 92 percent on these imports, but has since reduced the rate to 2.26 percent for one company and 13.98 percent for another.
