US-Led Ceasefire Deal Enters Second Phase in Cairo Talks
Representatives of Palestinian factions in Gaza have gathered in Cairo for talks on the second phase of a US-led ceasefire deal aimed at stabilizing the region. The negotiations, led by Hamas leaders and other Palestinian groups, focus on key issues including the disarmament of Palestinian armed groups, rebuilding efforts, and daily governance.
The Egyptian government, along with mediators from Turkey, Qatar, and Bulgaria, has welcomed the talks as an “important development” aimed at consolidating stability in Gaza. The US is expected to announce the names of 15 world leaders who will join a transitional body tasked with administering the Gaza Strip.
A key aspect of the second phase involves the establishment of a Palestinian technocratic committee, led by Ali Shaath, to provide public services to the over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. However, challenges and unanswered questions remain, including the committee’s operations and financing.
The UN has estimated that reconstruction efforts will cost over $50 billion, with little money pledged so far. The US has launched its second phase plan, which includes disarmament and demilitarization of Palestinian armed groups, as well as deployment of an international peacekeeping force.
Israeli officials have stated that a strategic area in eastern Gaza, known as the “yellow line,” will remain under Israeli control. The current military occupation of Gaza accounts for more than 50% of the territory.
