US Administration to End Temporary Deportation Protections for Somali Nationals
The Trump administration has announced plans to end temporary deportation protections and work permits for approximately 1,100 Somali nationals living in the US. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that the decision was made due to improved conditions in Somalia, which no longer meet the requirements for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This status shields migrants from deportation to countries deemed unsafe to return and grants temporary work authorization.
According to Noem, allowing Somali nationals to remain temporarily in the US is contrary to national interests. The administration has also faced criticism for its handling of Somalis in the US, with President Trump making derogatory comments about the community. In recent weeks, the administration has alleged large-scale public benefit fraud in Minnesota’s Somali community and threatened to strip naturalized Somali or foreign-born individuals of their US citizenship if convicted of such crimes.
The decision is expected to face legal challenges, and local officials have expressed concerns over the impact on the Somali community. The Trump administration has also taken steps to increase immigration enforcement in Minnesota, including cutting off federal childcare assistance and deploying additional agents to the state.
