US urged to refrain from involvement in Strait of Hormuz operations

US President Donald Trump Announces ‘Project Freedom’ Initiative for Stranded Ships in Strait of Hormuz

On Monday, US President Donald Trump announced plans to launch “Project Freedom”, a new initiative aimed at guiding ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The move is intended to assist countries whose vessels are currently stranded due to the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.

According to Trump, the project will provide support for ships in need, including those running low on food and supplies. He stated that any interference with the operation would be dealt with “forcefully”.

The Iranian military has issued a warning to the US Navy, stating that any foreign armed forces entering the Strait of Hormuz will be attacked. Iran’s military head, Ali Abdollahi, also advised commercial ships and oil tankers to refrain from moving unless they coordinate with Iran.

In response to Trump’s announcement, two missiles were reportedly fired at a US warship in the southern end of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian news agency Fars. The US has denied that its warship was struck.

The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) will provide support for the initiative with 15,000 personnel, over 100 aircraft, and various naval assets. CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated that the support is essential for regional security and maintaining the naval blockade.

Maritime experts have warned of a critical maritime security threat level in the Strait of Hormuz due to ongoing military operations. The UKMTO has advised mariners to consider routing via Oman’s territorial waters, where the US has established an enhanced security area.

The initiative comes as Iran continues to block nearly all shipping from the Gulf, leading to global energy price increases and inflation in the US.
