US Officials Estimate War Costs at $11.3bn, Potential Additional Funding Requested
During a congressional briefing on Tuesday, officials from President Donald Trump’s administration estimated that the first six days of the war in Iran had cost the US at least $11.3 billion. This figure does not include the total cost of the conflict and was provided to lawmakers as they have requested more information about the expenses.
The White House is expected to submit a request for additional funding for the war, with some officials estimating that the request could be for $50 billion. The administration has not provided a public assessment of the cost of the conflict or its expected duration.
The US-Israeli war on Iran has resulted in approximately 2,000 deaths, mostly among Iranians and Lebanese, as well as energy price increases across the Middle East. The United Nations Children’s Agency (UNICEF) reports that the “intensifying conflict” has killed or wounded over 1,100 children, creating a “catastrophic” situation for millions of children in the region.
Administration officials have also reported that $5.6 billion worth of munitions were used during the first two days of strikes. Members of Congress are concerned about the potential depletion of US military stocks at a time when the defense industry is struggling to meet demand.
Lawmakers from both parties have demanded public testimony under oath from administration officials regarding President Trump’s plans for the war, including its expected duration and post-conflict plans for Iran.
