US warned by Iran not to interfere with Strait of Hormuz operations

US to Launch “Project Freedom” to Guide Stranded Ships through Strait of Hormuz

The United States will begin a new operation, dubbed “Project Freedom,” on Monday to assist ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. The initiative aims to guide vessels safely out of restricted waterways.

Iran’s military has issued a warning to the US Navy, stating that any foreign armed forces entering the strait will be attacked. Iran’s head of unified command, Ali Abdollahi, said in a statement that commercial ships and oil tankers should refrain from moving unless they coordinate with Iranian authorities.

Hours later, Iran’s Fars news agency reported that two missiles hit a US warship at the southern end of the Strait of Hormuz. The US denied any involvement.

The operation is at the request of countries whose vessels are stranded due to the ongoing conflict in the region. President Donald Trump stated that the US will provide guidance to these countries, allowing them to “freely and ably get on with their business.”

The US military’s Central Command has announced its support for the effort, with 15,000 personnel, over 100 aircraft, warships, and drones involved. Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, emphasized that this support is essential to regional security and maintaining the naval blockade.

Iran has been blocking nearly all shipping from the Gulf since February, leading to a significant increase in global energy prices. The US has also imposed its own naval blockade on Iranian ports, which has contributed to rising inflation in the country.

The UKMTO has advised mariners to consider routing via Oman’s territorial waters, where the US has established an enhanced security area.
