US Approves $11bn Arms Package for Taiwan Amid China’s Military Drills
The US Department of State has issued a statement urging China to exercise restraint and avoid actions that raise tensions following recent military drills around Taiwan. The drills, which included the simulation of a blockade of the island, were described as “provocative” by Taipei.
China fired missiles and deployed jets and naval vessels during the exercises, which are part of a series of war games in the region. Beijing claims Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and has vowed to bring it under control.
The US supports peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and opposes unilateral changes to the status quo, including by force or coercion. The State Department spokesman, Tommy Pigott, stated that China’s military activities and rhetoric towards Taiwan increase tensions unnecessarily and urged Beijing to engage in meaningful dialogue.
Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te has called for a $40bn increase in Taiwan’s military spending, but the proposal is stalled in the country’s legislature. The US recently approved an $11bn arms package for Taiwan, which was seen as a response to China’s increasing assertiveness in the region.
The situation remains tense, with Beijing’s stance having prompted angry condemnations from Taiwanese officials and crackdowns on formerly autonomous areas such as Hong Kong following integration with China. The coming year will be crucial for Taiwan, according to President Lai, who emphasized the need for the country to prepare for all scenarios while hoping for a peaceful resolution.
