French Teenager Wins Thrilling Match Against Paraguayan Player
In a highly contested match at the Roland Garros tournament, 17-year-old French player Moise Kouame emerged victorious over Paraguayan player Adolfo Daniel Vallejo. The five-hour match lasted 4 hours and 56 minutes, with Kouame ultimately winning 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8).
Vallejo expressed his disappointment with the outcome of the match, attributing some of the delay to Brazilian referee Ana Carvalho’s inability to control the home crowd. He stated that a male umpire would have been more effective in managing the situation.
The French Tennis Federation (FFT) condemned Vallejo’s comments as “unacceptable” and announced that he would be fined for making sexist remarks about female referees. The FFT emphasized that an umpire’s competence is determined by their professionalism and ability to officiate at a high level, rather than their gender.
Vallejo attempted to clarify his comments on social media, stating that he was referring specifically to the referee’s handling of the crowd during the match. He also congratulated Kouame on his victory and acknowledged that the crowd’s support for the home player was natural.
The FFT has imposed a significant fine on Vallejo as part of its efforts to condemn sexist remarks in all forms. The organization offers its support to tournament umpires, including those who may be subjected to discriminatory comments or behavior.
