Venezuela releases dozens of political prisoners after lengthy detention periods

Venezuela’s Interim Government Releases Hundreds of Political Detainees

In a move announced by President Delcy Rodriguez’s government, hundreds of political detainees have been released from Venezuelan prisons. Ramon Centeno, a journalist who spent four years in prison, was among those freed on January 14. According to human rights group Foro Penal, more than 400 prisoners have been released since then.

Centeno was arrested in 2022 over an interview that the government disapproved of, and he was held on charges described as arbitrary and politically motivated by rights groups. He was released after a military operation led by the United States to abduct and imprison Venezuela’s former President Nicolas Maduro on January 3.

The prisoner release has been presented by the interim Venezuelan government as a “gesture of peace” following years of political division under Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chavez. However, critics argue that the releases are long overdue and question whether they signal a genuine shift away from Maduro’s policy of stifling dissent.

Many prisoners released so far have faced legal restrictions and fear of re-arrest. Venezuelan analyst Carmen Beatriz Fernandez notes that the country is facing an “irreversible” transition under the interim government, but the intentions behind it remain unclear. Foro Penal has recorded at least 18,842 cases of politically motivated arrests since 2014, nearly all under Maduro’s government.

Jesus Armas, an engineer and political activist, was among those recently released from prison. He recalled the moment he saw the sunrise for the first time in years, describing it as “poetry.” His release had been sudden, and even though he is now free, many of his friends remain behind bars.
