Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado faces uncertain future ahead

Venezuelan Opposition Leader Maria Corina Machado to Meet with US President Donald Trump

Maria Corina Machado, the leader of Venezuela’s opposition, has maintained a visible presence since the US operation to remove President Nicolas Maduro on January 3. Machado, 58, had been living in hiding for months after the 2024 presidential election and was widely seen as a potential successor to Maduro.

Machado has given interviews to various news outlets, including CBS, Fox News, and La Patilla, while also meeting with high-profile individuals such as Pope Leo at the Vatican. However, her role in Venezuelan politics is unclear, particularly after she was passed over to replace Maduro following his ouster.

According to Quico Toro, a Venezuelan journalist and political scientist, Machado’s legitimacy comes from her past efforts to advance Venezuelan democracy, but the current situation may be more challenging. “Her role in shaping Venezuela’s future now appears to be more medium to long term,” Toro said.

Machado had been seen as a strong contender for the presidency after Maduro’s government fell, but US President Donald Trump quickly dismissed this possibility. Trump announced plans to cooperate with Delcy Rodriguez, Maduro’s vice president, who has since been sworn in as interim president.

Trump stated that Machado “doesn’t have the support within or the respect within the country,” which led him to rule out her involvement in Venezuelan politics. Machado had previously outlined a vision for Venezuela where the opposition would take control of the government after Maduro’s fall from power.

Machado has since accepted the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to advance Venezuelan democracy, and she will meet with Trump in Washington, DC on Thursday. The meeting raises questions about Machado’s future role in Venezuelan politics and whether she will be able to achieve her goals despite Trump’s dismissal of her candidacy.

Trump’s decision to topple Maduro has sparked jubilation among Venezuelans in exile, but his military intervention and quick dismissal of Machado have raised concerns about his respect for Venezuelan sovereignty and international law.
