Violence Erupts in Mexico Amid Fears Over El Mencho Killings

Mexican Authorities Kill Notorious Drug Lord El Mencho in Operation

A high-stakes military operation in the town of Tapalpa resulted in the killing of Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho”, the leader of Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The 59-year-old was wanted by authorities for his involvement in trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine into the United States.

Following El Mencho’s death, a wave of violence swept across the country, with at least 18 states affected. Suspected members of organized groups set fire to buses and businesses, erected roadblocks, and disrupted basic services such as hospitals and grocery shopping. The US Embassy in Mexico issued a security alert to its citizens in several states, urging them to remain indoors.

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that there was “absolute coordination” with the governments of all states and praised the Mexican Army, National Guard, Armed Forces, and Security Cabinet for their efforts. Authorities in Jalisco, Michoacan, and Guanajuato reported at least 14 additional deaths, including seven members of the National Guard.

Uncertainty over who might lead El Mencho’s cartel has raised concerns about potential power struggles within the organization. Experts note that this could lead to a civil war between different factions, which would exacerbate the situation.

The operation against El Mencho was carried out by Mexican special forces with intelligence support from the US. The DEA had offered a $15 million reward for his capture, making him one of the most sought-after targets among drug lords.

As the country struggles to cope with the aftermath of El Mencho’s death, residents are expressing fear and uncertainty about the future. “The fear that remains in society is overwhelming,” said a resident of Zitacuaro, Michoacan, requesting anonymity.
