West Bengal Election Results Spark Violence
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the state election in West Bengal for the first time, securing 206 out of 294 assembly seats. The results were announced on Tuesday, marking a significant shift in power in the eastern state.
The BJP’s victory comes after Mamata Banerjee, leader of the regional All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, had ruled West Bengal as chief minister since 2011. Banerjee has rejected the results, accusing the federal government of rigging the election.
Violence broke out in several parts of the state, including the capital city of Kolkata, after the results were announced. Police reported clashes between rival party supporters, resulting in at least four deaths. The BJP attributed two of its workers’ fatalities to post-election violence, while the TMC claimed that two of their workers were beaten to death.
Police confirmed that one officer was shot in the leg during the clashes. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed West Bengal’s top officials to enforce “zero tolerance” towards any incidents of post-poll violence.
Banerjee refused to resign as chief minister, calling the BJP’s win an “immoral victory.” Her term is set to end on Thursday, after which newly elected politicians would be sworn in and the process of forming a new government would begin.
