Washington Post CEO Will Lewis Steps Down Amid Staff Layoffs
Will Lewis, the chief executive of The Washington Post, has announced his resignation from the position, effective immediately. Lewis made the announcement in a message to employees on Saturday, which was later shared on X by the White House bureau chief.
Lewis stated that he believes it is “now the right time” for him to step aside after two years of transformation at the newspaper. He attributed the decision to the need for new leadership to secure the paper’s long-term sustainability.
The Washington Post has been undergoing significant changes during Lewis’s tenure, including multiple rounds of layoffs and a shift in editorial direction. The publication announced it would not make an endorsement for the 2024 presidential election, which sparked controversy among critics. Additionally, Lewis faced scrutiny over his attempts to bring on former colleagues as top editors.
According to reports, hundreds of journalists were made redundant during the recent staff layoff, including those covering the Middle East and Ukraine. The Washington Post Guild, representing staff members, expressed concerns about Lewis’s leadership, stating that his departure is “long overdue.”
Jeff Bezos, the newspaper’s owner, has announced that chief financial officer Jeff D’Onofrio will take over as publisher. In a statement, Bezos emphasized the importance of The Post’s journalistic mission and its potential for growth under new leadership.
The data suggests that the paper’s readers provide valuable insights into its future direction. With this in mind, Bezos expressed confidence that the new leadership is positioned to lead the paper into an “exciting and thriving next chapter.”
