US President Joe Biden’s Comments on Gaza Death Toll Spark Controversy
In October 2023, then-President Joe Biden expressed skepticism about the death toll of Palestinians in Gaza, citing concerns over the accuracy of reports from the Ministry of Health in Gaza. “I have no notion that the Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed,” he said. “I’m sure innocents have been killed, and it’s the price of waging a war.” However, more than two years later, Israel has acknowledged killing over 70,000 Palestinians, confirming the Health Ministry’s data.
Rights advocates argue that Western officials and media outlets contributed to the dehumanization of Palestinians by casting doubt on the death toll. Abed Ayoub, executive director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, stated that the US government attempted to “gaslight” the world and discredit the Health Ministry numbers. Several Israeli media outlets have since quoted senior military officials acknowledging the 70,000 death toll.
The Palestinian Health Ministry has reported a total of 71,769 deaths since October 7, 2023, including 506 after a ceasefire was implemented in October last year. Humanitarian agencies and UN officials have confirmed the accuracy of the health ministry’s data. However, some experts estimate that the true death toll is higher due to unreported deaths and fatalities linked to the Israeli blockade.
In response to these reports, the US House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill to ban the Department of State from citing death statistics from the Health Ministry in Gaza. Pro-Israel commentators and advocacy groups have argued for years that Palestinian data should not be trusted. The US Palestinian Community Network has called on Western media outlets to challenge the Israeli Zionist narrative and print the truth about the genocide and human rights violations.
The conflict in Gaza has resulted in a significant loss of life, with many Western media outlets initially prefacing reports from the Health Ministry as “Hamas-run.” This editorial policy was criticized for demeaning Palestinians and dismissing their deaths.
