Will the Russia-Ukraine war end in 2026?

Kyiv, Ukraine – Experts Predict Future of Ongoing European Conflict

A Ukrainian serviceman and former military chief have shared their insights on the ongoing conflict in Europe. Vasily, a senior officer who lost his left foot in 2023, stated that Russian soldiers are “terrified” of Ukrainians due to personal experiences on the front line. However, he noted that Ukraine’s position is still vulnerable due to Russia’s superior numbers and economic resources.

Ihor Romanenko, a four-star general, believes that the only achievable goal at this point is a temporary pause in hostilities, which could occur as early as February 2026. He emphasized that achieving full peace with Russia is unlikely without Ukraine liberating its territories within its post-Soviet borders.

To bolster its military capabilities, Romanenko recommends introducing universal mobilization, increasing domestic arms production, and prioritizing wartime needs in economic decisions. Stricter martial law and increased support from Western allies are also seen as crucial to stopping Russian advances.

Analysts Volodymyr Fesenko and Ihar Tyshkevich have differing views on the potential for a peace deal. Fesenko suggests that a “window of opportunity” may emerge in the second half of 2026, but only if Russia does not breach the ceasefire and realizes Ukraine can stomach the war of attrition. Tyshkevich notes that global factors will influence the conflict’s outcome, including the shift towards a more multipolar world order with China’s growing global presence.

The experts also acknowledge that Ukraine may need to make concessions, such as ceding control of certain regions in exchange for Russian withdrawal from other areas. The ongoing conflict is expected to continue into 2027 if no significant progress is made.
