UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has expressed concern over the rising trend of violence against women in various conflict zones around the world. According to her, Sudan, Gaza, and Syria are among the countries where women and girls are facing increasing levels of violence with little accountability.
In these regions, mass rapes have been reported, as well as attacks on schools and shelters that provide vital services to affected communities. In Afghanistan, segregation of women is also a pressing issue. Mohammed emphasized that protection for women is becoming increasingly scarce as conflicts escalate.
Mohammed stated that the lack of accountability for violence against women is having far-reaching consequences. She noted that funding for initiatives aimed at protecting women’s rights has been dwindling, and the political will to address this issue is waning.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General emphasized that violence against women is not a secondary concern but rather a critical threat to peace and development. Mohammed’s comments highlight the need for increased attention and action to protect those most vulnerable in conflict zones.
