World Athletics Postpones Doha Diamond League Event to June 19
A multi-discipline athletics event scheduled for May 8 has been rescheduled to June 19, pending favorable conditions, according to organizers. The Doha Diamond League, a season-opening event in Qatar’s capital, Doha, was initially set to take place on the originally scheduled date but has been postponed due to concerns over “player and spectator safety.”
The decision to postpone the meeting was made by World Athletics, citing the need for athlete and spectator safety. The global governing body stated that the event will proceed on the new date if conditions permit. Organizers have been closely monitoring the situation in Doha and are working with local authorities and stakeholders to ensure a safe environment.
Recent developments in the Middle East, including ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, have led to increased security concerns. The Qatar Ministry of Defence reported intercepting a missile attack prior to the announcement of a two-week ceasefire deal mediated by Pakistan. Despite this, Gulf states continue to experience missile and drone attacks on their territories.
The rescheduled event will be held at the Khalifa International Stadium, which features temperature-regulated conditions with air cooling vents. The stadium hosted the 2019 World Athletics Championships and was one of the venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The Doha Diamond League is part of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League season, which will begin on May 16 and conclude at the Diamond League final in Brussels on September 5.
