Barcelona Star Lamine Yamal Cites LeBron James and Neymar as Inspirations Ahead of Champions League Match
Lamine Yamal, a 18-year-old striker for Barcelona, has expressed admiration for NBA star LeBron James and Brazilian forward Neymar, citing them as inspirations in his quest to lead the team to a Champions League comeback. Yamal’s Instagram profile image was recently changed to a photo of James embracing the NBA trophy following the Cleveland Cavaliers’ win over the Golden State Warriors in 2016.
Yamal stated that he will draw inspiration from LeBron James’ ability to overcome adversity, as his team trails 2-0 against Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinals. He also mentioned watching Neymar’s historic comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2017 Champions League, where Barcelona won the second leg 6-1 at home after losing 4-0 in France.
Yamal expressed his admiration for Neymar, stating that he is a player who “inspires everyone” and hopes to see him selected for Brazil’s World Cup squad. The striker has been playing for Brazilian club Santos and was not included in the most recent Brazil squad for warm-up matches.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick emphasized the importance of confidence in his team’s ability to pull off a comeback, saying “I believe in my team, and I think we can do it.” Flick also mentioned that midfielder Frenkie de Jong could make his first start after a long absence due to a hamstring injury.
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone did not rule out the possibility of goalkeeper Jan Oblak returning to the starting lineup, despite being sidelined for over a month due to a muscle injury. The team is hoping to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2017.
The match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will take place on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to face either Arsenal or Sporting Lisbon in the semifinals.
