Yemens separatist STC refuses to withdraw from Saudi Arabia-proximate provinces

Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council Agrees to Deploy Forces in Areas Under Saudi Control

A recent agreement between the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and the Riyadh-backed National Shield government forces has been reached, with the STC agreeing to deploy its forces into areas under Saudi control. The decision comes after a surprise offensive by the STC in December, which saw the group seize control of resource-rich provinces in Hadramout and al-Mahra.

Rashad al-Alimi, head of the internationally recognized Presidential Leadership Council, has warned against unilateral military moves by southern separatists, cautioning that further advances by the STC could have serious consequences. The UAE has denied allegations made by Saudi Arabia, which claims that it is backing the STC’s actions.

The STC has rejected al-Alimi’s authority and insisted on maintaining its presence in the provinces, despite official demands for withdrawal. A spokesperson for the group stated that its units would continue operating in the seized areas, but would be coordinated with “Homeland Shield” forces affiliated with the Yemeni government and the Saudi-led coalition.

The governor of Hadramout province has urged the STC to withdraw its forces from the area, warning that continued defiance could lead to bloodshed. The European Union has also expressed concern over the developments in Hadramout and al-Mahra, calling for de-escalation and reaffirming support for Yemen’s unity.

The Saudi-led coalition announced air strikes on weapons and military vehicles arriving at the port of Mukalla, which is under STC control. The UAE has denied allegations made by Saudi Arabia regarding the supply of military equipment to the STC.
