Zohran Mamdani elected as New York Citys first Muslim mayor

New York City Mayor Takes Oath in Historic Ceremony

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York City’s mayor at a decommissioned Manhattan subway station on January 1st. The ceremony, conducted by New York Attorney General Letitia James, marked the official transition of power and took place just after midnight.

Mamdani placed his hand on a Quran during the oath-taking process, making history as the first Muslim to lead the city. In a brief speech, he expressed his gratitude for the honor and privilege of becoming mayor.

The ceremony was held at the old City Hall station, an architecturally stunning venue known for its arched ceilings. Mamdani highlighted the importance of public transit in the city’s vitality and legacy during his inaugural remarks. He also announced Mike Flynn as his new Department of Transportation commissioner.

Mamdani concluded his address by thanking everyone present before ascending the stairs with a smile. A more elaborate public inauguration is scheduled to take place at 1pm (18:00 GMT) at City Hall, followed by a public celebration on Broadway’s “Canyon of Heroes”.
