Bears mount dramatic fourth-quarter surge to edge Packers
The Chicago Bears overcame a 14-point deficit in the final quarter to secure a hard-fought victory over their NFC North rivals, the Green Bay Packers, in an instant classic of NFL playoff football. Trailing 24-10 with just over seven minutes remaining, the Bears were given new life when quarterback Justin Fields led a thrilling scoring drive that culminated in a touchdown pass from 30 yards out to wide receiver Darnell Mooney. The extra point attempt was good, and suddenly the game had all the makings of an epic finish. That’s exactly what it became as the Bears continued their momentum, forcing a Packers punt on their next possession and then driving down to the Green Bay 20-yard line with just over two minutes left in regulation. Fields again proved the hero, finding tight end Cole Kmet for a 15-yard score that put the Bears up by seven. But the Packers were not done yet. Led by quarterback Jordan Love, who orchestrated a masterclass drive of his own, Green Bay managed to tie the game at 31-31 with just seconds left on the clock. The ensuing kickoff was recovered by Chicago safety Eddie Jackson, and when the Bears won the ensuing coin toss, Fields and company were determined to put an end to the drama. The ensuing drive, however, belonged to the Packers’ defense. Love’s scrambling ability allowed him to evade several would-be tacklers as he picked up crucial yardage on a 3rd-and-9 conversion, setting up a game-winning field goal attempt from 42 yards out. The kick sailed through the uprights with just seconds left on the clock, securing a 34-31 victory for the Packers. Despite the heartbreak of defeat, Bears quarterback Justin Fields was effusive in his praise for his teammates, saying, “I’m so proud of this team and what we accomplished today. We knew it was going to be a tough road ahead, but I believe in every single one of my guys. We’ll bounce back from this, and we’ll be even stronger because of it.” The win sets up a tantalizing NFC North showdown between the Bears and Packers next week, with all three of their playoff spots now firmly in play.
