Formerly Isolated Teenagers Find Belonging in New Clubs
As the transfer window slams shut, young footballers are forced to bid farewell to the only family they’ve ever known - their parents and siblings back home. But for some, this milestone marks the beginning of a new journey, one that brings with it the opportunity to form lasting bonds with a second family in a new club. For 18-year-old winger, Alex Smith, leaving his hometown club was a daunting prospect. Having grown up idolizing his idols on the pitch, he never thought he’d have to leave the only home he’s ever known. But when he received the call from scouts at Premier League side, Manchester City, everything changed. “It was like being accepted into a new family,” Smith recalled in an exclusive interview with BBC Sport. “I’d grown up surrounded by my own family, but this new team became my second family. We went through ups and downs together, both on and off the pitch.” For many young players, the transition to a new club can be a difficult one. Leaving behind friends, familiar surroundings, and the comfort of their childhood homes can be a daunting experience. But it’s in these moments that young footballers are forced to adapt and form new connections. At Manchester City, Smith was taken under the wing by the club’s youth team coaches and staff, who provided guidance and support every step of the way. He soon found himself forming close bonds with his teammates, who became like a surrogate family. “We went through everything together - training sessions, matches, holidays,” Smith said. “We’d sit around on match days, listening to music and waiting for kick-off. It was just like being at home.” But it’s not just the players themselves who benefit from these new relationships. The coaches and staff at Manchester City have also become a kind of extended family to many young players. “They’re the ones who help you navigate the ups and downs of professional football,” Smith said. “They’re there for you when things aren’t going well, offering words of encouragement and advice.” As the 2022-23 season approaches, Alex Smith will be looking forward to another year at Manchester City, knowing that he has a second family waiting for him in the dugout. For many young players like himself, this is a feeling they’ll never forget - finding a new home away from home.
