Receiving Unit of the Future: UF's Receivers Projected as Program's Best in Decades
GAINESVILLE — Former Gator Shane Matthews, a highly decorated quarterback who played for Steve Spurrier from 1992 to 1994, has high praise for the current crop of wideouts at the University of Florida. As the first star quarterback under Spurrier, Matthews had the privilege of throwing to a talented group of pass catchers during his time on the team, including Willie Jackson Jr., Ernie Mills, and Jack Jackson. Now, with a new generation of receivers emerging, Matthews believes that UF’s receiving unit may be the best in decades. Led by standout players such as Chris Doering, Reidel Anthony, Jacquez Green, and Ike Hilliard, who all went on to successful NFL careers, the current group is poised to make their mark on the program. Matthews, who currently works as an analyst for ESPN, has been impressed by the speed, agility, and athleticism of UF’s receivers. He believes that this year’s unit has the potential to be just as dominant as the teams he played with during his time at Florida. “I’ve seen some great groups of receivers come through here over the years,” Matthews said in an interview. “But I think this one might be special. They’ve got a great mix of size, speed, and playmaking ability that could take them to the top.” With a strong quarterback in place, led by a young signal-caller who has shown flashes of brilliance on the field, Matthews believes that UF’s receivers have all the tools they need to succeed at the highest level. “I think we’re looking at a group of receivers that could be just as good as some of the all-time greats,” he said. “They’ve got the talent, they’ve got the work ethic, and they’ve got the drive to make it happen.” As the season gets underway, Matthews will be keeping a close eye on UF’s receiving unit, eager to see them put their skills on display against some of the toughest opponents in the country. “I’m excited to see what this group can do,” he said. “I think they’ve got a lot of potential and I’m looking forward to watching them make some big plays down the field.”
