Sugar Bowl Upset Sends Rebels to National Stage
In one of the most thrilling finishes in recent college football history, the No. 4-seeded Mississippi Rebels outlasted top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs 31-27 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Monday night. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading blows and neither able to gain a clear advantage until the final minutes of play. Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Smith-Njigba led the charge for his team, completing 22 of 32 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. He also showcased his legs, rushing for 43 yards on six carries. Meanwhile, Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff was nearly unstoppable at times, but struggled with accuracy in the second half. The Bulldogs’ offense managed just 11 points in the final quarter after trailing by one point entering the fourth period. With only seconds remaining on the clock and Mississippi trailing 27-24, kicker Parker Brown booted a 45-yard field goal to give his team a one-point lead. Georgia’s desperation heave attempt on the ensuing drive fell incomplete, securing the Rebels’ win. Mississippi head coach Chris Klieman praised his team’s resilience in the face of adversity, saying, “We’ve been in tough situations all season and our guys have consistently shown the heart and determination to come out on top. Tonight was no exception.” The victory sends Mississippi to the College Football Playoff semifinals, where they will face off against the No. 3-seeded Oklahoma Sooners.
