Activision Blends War and Romance in Controversial Call of Duty Advert
An advertisement for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has been banned by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for trivialising sexual violence, it has been reported. The ASA received several complaints about the advert, which featured a female character engaging in romantic and intimate interactions with her male counterpart amidst scenes of war. The authority deemed that the ad “romanticised” the depiction of sexual assault and was therefore irresponsible. Activision Blizzard UK Ltd claimed that the advert was targeted at adults, but the ASA ultimately disagreed, stating that the ad’s tone and messaging would likely appeal to a younger audience. As a result, theASA banned the advert from being shown in its current form, with the company required to make significant changes before it can be re-released. The decision highlights the ongoing challenges faced by advertisers in balancing the need for creative freedom with the responsibility to avoid causing harm or offense.
