Artificial Intelligence Music: A Growing Industry with Concerns
The music industry has largely adopted the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create, produce, and distribute music. From demo recording and sample sourcing to serving digital liner notes and building playlists, AI has become an indispensable tool for music creators. In recent years, several major players have entered the market, including Apple Music, which has introduced optional labels for AI-generated songs and visuals. Qobuz has also begun automatically detecting and labeling AI music. Additionally, Google’s AI music maker is set to join the Gemini app, and Deezer has opened its AI music detection tool to other platforms. Despite the growing adoption of AI in music, there are still concerns about its authenticity and impact on the industry. Many people struggle to identify AI-generated music, with 97% of those surveyed unable to distinguish between human-made and AI-created tracks. However, experts argue that this is not necessarily a bad thing, as AI can be used to augment and enhance music creation rather than replace it entirely. Some companies are already embracing the potential of AI in music production. ElevenLabs has developed an AI album featuring its music generator, while Bandcamp has banned AI-generated content from its platform. Universal Music Group has also partnered with Nvidia to create a new AI deal. However, not everyone is convinced about the benefits of AI in music. Some musicians have expressed concerns about the lack of creativity and originality in AI-generated music, likening it to “bullshit.” Others have raised questions about copyright ownership when an AI-generated artist gets a record deal. As the use of AI in music continues to grow, it’s likely that we’ll see more debates about its authenticity, impact on the industry, and potential applications. With major players like Apple Music, Google, and Universal Music Group already on board, one thing is certain: artificial intelligence will be an integral part of the music industry for years to come.
