British Advertising Watchdog Cracks Down on Crypto Firm
The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has sided with consumers who complained that advertisements by popular cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase trivialized the risks associated with investing in digital assets, deeming such claims misleading and irresponsible. Coinbase’s ads claimed that buying Bitcoin could help alleviate cost of living concerns, despite acknowledging the high volatility of cryptocurrency prices. The regulator has ruled that this approach is inconsistent with its advertising codes of practice, which emphasize clear and transparent communication. The ASA noted that while Coinbase did provide some guidance on the risks involved in investing in cryptocurrencies, the ads were deemed to “downplay” these risks and create a misleading impression about the potential benefits of investing.
