Citywide Fire Resistance Demonstrated in Anaheim
A crowd gathers to watch two homes burn down, one just 30 minutes after ignition, while the other remains largely intact due to simple design changes. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) staged a demonstration at a firefighting training center last June, showcasing how easy it is to protect buildings from intense heat and flames. Under bright sunlight, the burning demo home’s smoke plume forces spectators back, while its unscathed neighbor stands remarkably resilient. The test involved two identical homes on adjacent lots: one was left with its original design, which resulted in a total loss within the 30-minute mark, while the other had undergone modifications to enhance fire resistance. The former experienced intense heat and flames, resulting in nearly complete destruction, whereas the latter’s wooden frame remained relatively intact due to improved insulation and additional structural reinforcement. The IBHS aims to educate builders, architects, and homeowners on how to incorporate fire-resistant design elements into their structures. These simple changes can significantly reduce the risk of damage from wildfires, providing a vital layer of protection for properties in high-risk areas.
