Cox Communications not liable for pirated music, Supreme Court rules
The Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by major record labels against Cox Communications, effectively clearing the cable and internet service provider of liability for facilitating piracy among its users. In a unanimous decision, the court determined that Cox did not induce its customers to infringe on copyrights or provide a service specifically designed to facilitate piracy. This ruling reverses a 2019 jury verdict that found Cox liable for $1 billion in damages related to copyright infringement by its internet subscribers.
