Deepfake Law Set to Take Effect in UK This Week
The UK government is set to bring into effect a new law aimed at tackling the creation and distribution of AI-generated deepfakes this week. The legislation, which was passed by Parliament last year, makes it an offense to create or share deepfakes that are designed to deceive people for malicious purposes. The law defines deepfakes as artificially generated audio or video content that is used to make someone appear or sound like someone else. Under the new law, those found guilty of creating or sharing deepfakes could face fines and even imprisonment. The move aims to protect vulnerable individuals from being manipulated by AI-generated content that could be used to spread misinformation or cause harm.
