Discord Ditches Face Scan Age Verification Amid Backlash
Discord has abandoned its planned global rollout of face scan-based age verification following a barrage of user protests and concerns over privacy and security issues. Citing a “limited test” in the UK as a reason to end the program, Savannah Badalich, head of product policy at Discord, stated that the company will instead explore alternative methods for verifying users’ ages. The move comes after widespread criticism on social media platforms directed towards Discord’s partnership with Persona, an age verification provider under scrutiny over its handling of sensitive user data.
