DIY Tax Services Show Mixed Results
I spent several weeks trying out H&R Block’s DIY tax service, along with competitors TurboTax and Credit Karma Tax, to see which one came out on top. While H&R Block’s service had some notable advantages, it also fell short in a few key areas. One of the standout features of H&R Block’s DIY service is its comprehensive guidance and support system. The software walks you through each step of the tax preparation process with clear explanations and instructions, making it easy to navigate even the most complex tax situations. However, when it comes to pricing, H&R Block’s DIY service is not the cheapest option. A basic return that files for one person costs $59.99, while a more comprehensive package that includes audit support starts at $89.99 for a single return. In terms of ease of use, Credit Karma Tax was the clear winner. The software is incredibly intuitive and made even the most complex tax situations feel almost effortless to resolve. While H&R Block’s service also received high praise for its user-friendliness, it couldn’t quite match Credit Karma Tax’s level of ease and speed. TurboTax, on the other hand, was a mixed bag. On one hand, its machine learning technology allowed me to identify every single deduction I was eligible for with minimal guidance – but this also meant that I had to manually review and verify many of my credits, which took up way more time than necessary. In contrast, H&R Block’s DIY service did an excellent job of automatically identifying deductions and credits based on the information you provide. However, I sometimes found myself having to dig through lengthy explanations of obscure tax rules in order to get everything right – a process that could be frustrating for those with less experience. Overall, while H&R Block’s DIY tax service has its strengths and weaknesses, it remains one of the best options available for those looking for guidance and support during the tax filing process.
