Encyclopedia Britannica Sues OpenAI Over Alleged Copyright Infringement
Enormous tech giant OpenAI is facing a multi-front copyright battle after Encyclopedia Britannica filed a high-profile lawsuit against it, alleging that its AI model GPT-4 relied heavily on the publisher’s copyrighted content to train itself. According to Britannia, OpenAI has been “memorizing” its content without permission and producing responses that are remarkably similar to those found in Britannic libraries. The AI giant is accused of copying significant portions of Britannia’s work without authorization, using these examples as training data for GPT-4. As a result, the publisher claims that OpenAI has produced near-verbatim copies of its content on demand. With this latest move, Britannia puts pressure on OpenAI to respect intellectual property rights and cease sharing copyrighted material with its AI model.
