Facebook Test Launches Premium Link-Sharing Feature
Meta is piloting a new subscription-based model that allows users to share up to five links per post, with the option to upgrade to six links for an additional fee of £9.99 per month. To access this feature, users will be required to verify their identity through a government-approved ID check or by using a credit card on file. Those who choose to subscribe will see enhanced engagement metrics and notifications on their posts, as well as increased visibility for their content in the News Feed algorithm. However, critics have expressed concerns that this move may create an uneven playing field, where users with deeper pockets are given more opportunities to reach their audiences. As part of this test, Meta is also experimenting with a new “verified” badge that will be displayed on the posts of users who have opted for the premium subscription. The company hopes that by providing a clear indicator of a user’s authenticity and commitment to sharing high-quality content, it can improve engagement and increase the overall value proposition of its platform. The test is currently being run in several countries, including the UK, US, and Canada, and will be subject to close monitoring by regulatory bodies. Meta has not yet announced when or if this feature will roll out more widely, but expects that users will have a say in its development through ongoing user testing and feedback.
