FBI Buying Americans' Location Data
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is purchasing commercially available location data from private companies, which can be used to track individuals without a warrant or their knowledge. This data collection method contrasts with traditional methods, such as obtaining information directly from cell phone providers, and raises concerns about the government’s ability to monitor citizens without oversight. The Electronic Communications Privacy Act provides some guidelines for this type of data collection, but its limits are unclear. FBI Director Kash Patel acknowledged that buying location data has yielded valuable intelligence for the agency, despite senators’ requests to discontinue such practices.
