Foldable Phones Get Serious About Productivity
Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 is being touted as a mobile workstation, but how well does it actually live up to its lofty claims? In our hands-on testing, we found that the phone’s productivity capabilities are limited by its small screen and lack of traditional keyboard. The biggest challenge is typing on the tiny, flexible display, which requires a combination of swiping and pinching motions. While some apps adapt well to this input method, many struggle to provide accurate and efficient typing experiences. Even with these limitations, we were able to squeeze out some decent productivity from our phone - but it’s not exactly a replacement for a laptop. One notable exception is Samsung’s own DeX mode, which provides a desktop-like experience on the larger outer screen when paired with an external monitor. However, this requires a separate device and setup process, making it less than ideal as a standalone solution. For now, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 feels more like a proof-of-concept than a fully fleshed-out productivity tool. But as phone technology continues to advance and manufacturers invest in more innovative solutions, we may see these devices become more viable alternatives to traditional laptops.
