Global RAM Shortage Threatens Consumer Electronics Prices
The global memory shortage has become a significant issue for consumer electronics, with major manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron shifting their resources towards more lucrative deals with AI companies. As a result, the supply of random access memory (RAM) for consumer products has dwindled, leading to price hikes across various device categories, including laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and others. Several companies have already raised the prices of their products in response to the shortage, such as Raspberry Pi and Framework. Other major brands, like Dell, Asus, Acer, Xiaomi, and Nothing, have warned about impending price hikes due to the increasing costs of RAM. Analysts at the International Data Corporation predict that the shortage may persist until 2027. The situation has led to innovative solutions, including prebuilt PCs sold without RAM or with significantly reduced capacities. This trend is expected to continue as manufacturers struggle to maintain production and supply chains in the face of escalating demand from AI companies.
