Google Launches 24/7 AI Agent Gemini Spark, but at What Cost?
Gemini’s new AI agent is about as good as Google’s demo. The company gave me access to Spark last week. Google advertises Spark as an AI agent that can take on tasks and work on them in the background - even tasks that have multiple steps - allowing you to put your phone down or walk away from your computer. It also claims to be “always under your direction,” with the ability to check in with users before taking major actions. However, this convenience comes with a price. Spark’s financial costs and potential privacy tradeoffs are not yet fully understood, raising questions about whether the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. As I spent more time with Spark, I began to wonder if Google’s ambitious project is truly worth the investment. Google has touted Spark as a game-changer for productivity and convenience. While it can perform tasks surprisingly well, its true value lies in how it fits into your daily routine - or whether it becomes a crutch that you don’t need. One potential drawback of Spark is that it may lead to a sense of complacency among users, who rely too heavily on the AI agent to handle their tasks. This could have negative consequences for creativity and problem-solving skills.
