High-Stakes Trial Begins Over Future of OpenAI
Sam Altman and Elon Musk are set to face off in a high-stakes trial that could significantly impact the future of tech’s leading AI startup, OpenAI. The trial commenced with jury selection on April 27th, as Musk pursues his 2024 lawsuit alleging that OpenAI has abandoned its founding mission of developing AI to benefit humanity and instead prioritized profit growth. As a co-founder, Musk claims that Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman deceived him into investing in the company before deviating from their original goal. However, OpenAI maintains that this lawsuit is a baseless attempt by Musk to sabotage a competitor, specifically his own SpaceX/xAI/X ventures, such as Grok, which competes with ChatGPT. In his lawsuit, Musk seeks Altman and Brockman’s removal, an end to OpenAI’s public benefit corporation status, and up to $150 billion in damages if successful.
